On October 17, 2018, a conversation between Berggruen Institute Chairman and Founder, Nicolas Berggruen, and D.A Wallach, songwriter, artist, investor, and essayist took the Town Hall Stage to discuss big ideas that will shape the 21st century.
The event started with a networking reception, followed by lunch. Nicolas Berggruen shared his remarks on why he choose to settle in Los Angeles as opposed to anywhere else in the world. He described Los Angeles as a frequently growing city, that’s appreciative with new ideas and new people. He believes Los Angeles is place that’s not only prosperous with its multiple talents, but also a city that looks towards the future.
“Los Angeles has the personality of many cities. When you are so complex, you need to come together on a variety of issues – transportation, housing, and energy – to be successful.”
The Berggruen Institute will be a non-partisan think tank that will have its headquarters in the mountains above The Getty Center. He went into detail of his plans to collaborate with the city and to bring the various communities in Los Angeles together on a variety of issues such as affordable housing, transportation, tax reform, energy, etc.
He pointed out to California State Senator, Bob Hertzberg, who was also present at the event and who is a supporter of Berggruen’s mission, his plans on working toward tax reform and tax income.
