On Tuesday, April 25, 2006, William Bratton, Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, converses with KPCC Host Patt Morrison and participates in a Q & A session with Town Hall Los Angeles. Bratton???s monthly appearance on KPCC???s Ask the Chief will broadcast from the Town Hall event at 2:00 PM.
Bratton???s priorities as Police Chief include accelerating the recruitment and training of new officers, eliminating graffiti, and policing minor offenses - described as his ???Broken Windows approach. Bratton said of his tactics, ???It???s guaranteed that if you don???t control those minor types of violations, you are going to create a climate in which the people perpetrating them are emboldened to try and get away with more.?????
Appointed Chief in October 2002, Bratton addressed the steady decline in police officers by promising to increase the number of officers to 12,000. On April 12, 2006, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa - standing beside Bratton - proposed a hike in the homeowners trash pick-up fee to raise $127 million earmarked for balancing the city budget and achieving an 11,000-officer force by 2010.??
