AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL'S LARRY COX TO DELIVER SPEECH "THE WAR ON HUMAN RIGHTS"

MEDIA ADVISORY

Los Angeles, CA, Tuesday, January 30, 2007, Larry Cox, Executive Director, Amnesty International USA, will deliver his speech "The War on Human Rights" to Town Hall Los Angeles on February 6, 2007, at The Regency Club. Concerned citizens can ask Cox about the state of human rights.

After the execution of Saddam Hussein, Cox said, "The organization has consistently called for Hussein to be held accountable through fair trial proceedings, and strongly contests that his execution symbolizes justice served? The rushed execution of Saddam Hussein is simply wrong." Cox has been executive director since January 2006.

Responding to remarks made by a Pentagon official on detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cox said, "Amnesty International has worked with other human rights organizations, legal associations, faith communities and international bodies in opposing US policies in Guantanamo and will continue to do so as one of a cacophony of voices calling for its closure."

Historically, Town Hall and its members have convened programs on human and individual rights. In 1977, Ambassador James Shen of Taiwan discussed human rights in China - "The Rights of Man in Perspective."? In 2006, ACLU President Nadine Strossen discussed civil liberties amidst the War on Terror, and Journalist Gabriel Meyer discussed the genocide in Sudan at "A Conversation about Darfur."
