ACLU PRESIDENT ADDRESSES CIVIL LIBERTIES AMIDST THE WAR ON TERROR

MEDIA ADVISORY

Los Angeles, CA - Thursday, November 2, 2006 - Nadine Strossen, President of the American Civil Liberties Union, will speak to Town Hall Los Angeles on November 16, 2006. Strossen's appearance sheds light on how the War on Terror, the War on Drugs, and other ongoing campaigns affect American civil liberties.

Strossen has been the President of the ACLU since 1991. In January 2005, she described the role of the ACLU by saying, "What is unique about the ACLU is that we set as our mission what should be the mission of the government, and that is to defend all fundamental rights of all people." Strossen has been a law professor at New York Law School since 1989.

In January 2006, when asked what the greatest threat to minorities is, Strossen responded, "I would have to say the war on drugs?it is so clearly disproportionately enforced against minorities in a way that leads to over-incarceration and decimation of the communities?I think that the war on drugs is a war on the Constitution and a war on racial minorities."

Throughout its nearly 70-year history, Town Hall has examined the state of civil liberties. In 2005, ?Representative Jane Harman (D- Calif., 36th District) spoke to Town Hall about the "Missteps in the War on Terror." Two former ACLU Directors have also appeared at Town Hall: Roger N. Baldwin in 1944 and Patrick M. Malin in 1950, as well as Ronald A. Zumbrum, President, Pacific Legal Foundation, who in 1984 addressed the "Demise of Individual Freedom."

Since 1937, Town Hall Los Angeles has been dedicated to promoting civic participation and awareness. As a nonpartisan and nonprofit forum, we encourage a public discussion on issues of regional, national, and international significance.
