AUTHOR OF WAR AND FAITH IN SUDAN GABRIEL MEYER ADDRESSES TOWN HALL LOS ANGELES

Wednesday, June 7, 2006, Gabriel Meyer, noted journalist and author of War and Faith in Sudan, converses with Town Hall Los Angeles at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles on June 20, 2006. The event coincides with the Skirball photography exhibit Rwanda: After, Darfur: Now.

Meyer???s War and Faith in Sudan, published in 2005, has been widely acclaimed for its stirring and insightful account of the war against the Nuba people of Central Sudan. The landmark work recently won ForeWord Magazine???s bronze ???Book of the Year award for Essays in its category.

???I have always believed that it is one of the functions of journalism to bring to light what is hidden, to tell not the story that everyone is telling, but the one that no one is???, said Meyer.??

Meyer???s writing from war-torn areas has earned him several journalism awards, including a Catholic Press Association award he received in 1989 for his coverage of the first Palestinian intifada.

In 1997, Meyer interviewed Sudan???s legendary human rights champion Bishop Macram Max Gassis and later traveled with him in Sudan, which led to Gabriel Meyer writing War and Faith in Sudan. Subsequent trips provided the basis for the feature-length documentary The Hidden Gift: War & Faith in Sudan, written and narrated by Meyer.
