  • Governance in the Digital Age with Nicolas Berggruen
    October 14, 2019
    7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

In partnership with New Roads School

Join us for a conversation with billionaire investor Nicholas Berggruen and journalist Nathan Gardels about how globalization and technology have given rise to a populist backlash against income inequality across Europe and the US, threatening our democratic systems. Berggruen and Gardels, co-authors of Renovating Democracy, will propose ways to counter populism by using social media to bring people together at home, and by finding a new partnership structure to deal with China and other economic competitors overseas. Their talk comes as populism is polarizing democratic politics in the US, France, Italy, Hungary, Poland and Brexit-era Britain, and at the same time protesters in Hong Kong are challenging the authority of one-party rule in China.

Nathan Gardels is Co-Founder of the Berggruen Institute and Editor-in-Chief of The WorldPost, a partnership with the Washington Post. He is the coauthor of Intelligent Governance for the 21st Century: A Middle Way between East and West, a Financial Times best book of 2012. His previous books include American Idol after Iraq, The Changing Global Order and At Century???s End.
