Join LAWAC for a discussion with Stanford's Dr. Larry Diamond on the state of democracy around the world. Larry Diamond is a world-renowned expert in democracy and democratic transitions, and has done extensive work in developing countries in addition to his work as a professor and scholar. Dr. Diamond will be sharing insights from his new book Ill Winds: Saving Democracy from Russian Rage, Chinese Ambition, and American Complacency. About the book: 'Ill Winds’ core argument is stark: the defense and advancement of democratic ideals relies on U.S. global leadership. If we do not reclaim our traditional place as the keystone of democracy, today’s authoritarian wave could become a tsunami, providing an opening for Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and their admirers to turn the twenty-first century into a dark time of surging authoritarianism. We are at a hinge in history, between a new era of tyranny and an age of democratic renewal. Free governments can defend their values; free citizens can exercise their rights. We can make the internet safe for liberal democracy, exploit the soft, kleptocratic underbelly of dictatorships, and revive America’s degraded democracy. Ill Winds offers concrete, deeply informed suggestions to fight polarization, reduce the influence of money in politics, and make every vote count. In 2019, freedom’s last line of defense still remains “We the people.”' Dr. Larry Diamond is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He is also a professor by courtesy of political science and sociology at Stanford University and a past director of its Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. In 2004, Diamond served in Baghdad as a senior adviser on governance to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq. His books include The Spirit of Democracy: The Struggle to Build Free Societies Throughout the World. He is the founding coeditor of the Journal of Democracy and has edited or coedited fifty books on democracy. VENUE: Moss Theater 3131 Olympic Blvd, Santa Monica CA 90404 Please reserve no later than 12:00 pm on Friday, June 7. Cancellations must be made by 12:00 pm on Friday, June 7 in order to receive a refund.

In partnership with our friends at Los Angeles World Affairs Council

The Los Angeles World Affairs Council is honored to host the 25th Secretary of Defense Dr. Ash Carter on June 17th at the Writer’s Guild Theater in Beverly Hills. Our discussion with the Secretary will cover the technological, strategic, and leadership imperatives that drove the Pentagon’s innermost operations and its most far-reaching changes. As Secretary of Defense, Carter led the creation of the military plan and international coalition to destroy ISIS, capturing Mosul and Raqqa and eliminating the group’s leaders and plotters while simultaneously conducting operations in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, and beyond. Carter also designed and executed the strategic pivot to the Asia-Pacific, worked to establish a new playbook for confronting Russia’s aggression, and launched a defense cyber strategy. Secretary Carter’s new book “Inside the Five-Sided Box” explores his time at the world’s largest organization, where he was responsible for more than three-million civilian and military employees and a half-trillion dollar budget. The book provides insight into his decades of public service at the Pentagon, but also full of business strategy, technology foresight, and much more. Dr. Ash Carter is a theoretical physicist, a professor, and a public servant; or a “scholar and a bureaucrat.” He was President Barack Obama’s Secretary of Defense from 2015 to 2017, served in the Clinton Administration, and is currently the Director for Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. ***Signed books will be available for purchase*** Venue: Writers Guild Theater. 135 S Doheny Drive, Beverly Hills CA 90211 Date & Time: June 17 (Monday), 6:00 pm Registration/Cash Bar, 7:00 pm Talk begins **Last day to make reservation: June 14, 2019 **Last day for cancellations with full refund: June 14, 2019 Seating: First come first serve Parking Information: $6.00 Parking is located in the parking garage entrance to the west side of S.
