Secretary Clough Discusses Expanding Smithsonian's Reach with Town Hall LA

Los Angeles, CA – Thursday, January 6, 2011 – Wayne Clough, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, will address TOWN HALL Los Angeles on “New Perspectives at the Smithsonian,” Thursday, January 20, 2011, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

On expanding the Smithsonian’s reach, Clough said, "We are using our resources so that learners of all ages can benefit from our work by offering free online conferences on subjects ranging from Abraham Lincoln to the world’s oceans, providing lesson plans for teachers, and, of course, presenting world-class exhibitions for our museum visitors.  Millions of people are now part of our Smithsonian learning network.  My idea is simple: if you can’t come to the Smithsonian in Washington, then we will bring it to you through our websites, magazine, traveling exhibitions and online services."

Clough is the 12th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and has overseen major openings including the reopening of the National Museum of American History, the Hall of Human Origins and the Ocean Hall at the National Museum of Natural History. He is one of 14 civil engineers to have been twice awarded civil engineering’s oldest recognition, the Norman Medal, in 1982 and in 1996.

The Smithsonian Institution was founded in 1846 and has 19 museums, numerous research centers, and the National Zoo. The vast complex includes the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Portrait Gallery.
