JOURNALISTS GIVE STORY BEHIND PULITZER PRIZE WINNING STORY ???ALTERED OCEANS???
Los Angeles, CA ??" Wednesday, September 26, 2007 ??" TOWN HALL LOS ANGELES welcomes Los Angeles Times journalists to discuss their series ???Altered Oceans on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy. Angelenos have the opportunity to ask how global climate change is affecting our oceans.
???Altered Oceans, winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism, portrays how industrial society has polluted the oceans and changed their basic chemistry threatening sea life and human health. Ninety percent of worldwide stocks of tuna, cod and other big fish have disappeared in the last 50 years.
In Part I, LA Times Assistant Managing Editor Kenneth R. Weiss writes about the destructive changes occurring in the oceans, ???In many places???some of the most advanced forms of ocean life are struggling to survive while the most primitive are thriving and spreading???Where this pattern is most pronounced, scientists evoke a scenario of evolution running in reverse, returning to the primeval seas of hundreds of millions of years ago.???
Panelists include Marc Duvoisin, Assistant Managing Editor, John Vande Wege, Editorial Multimedia Manager, and Kenneth R. Weiss, Staff Reporter on California Coast & Oceans, Los Angeles Times. John Arthur, Managing Editor, will provide opening remarks and introduce the journalists.
