TOWN HALL LOS ANGELES ASKS HOW DO WE END LONG-TERM HOMELESSNESS

Los Angeles, CA - Wednesday, September 27, 2006, Town Hall Los Angeles presents a panel discussion October 11, 2006, on ending long-term homelessness. Participants can question experts on the growing crises generated by the shortage in affordable housing throughout LA County.

Panelists include Carla I. Javits, President and Chief Executive Officer, Corporation for Supportive Housing; Jeff Schaffer, Assistant Vice-President, Grant Programs, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation; and Lisa Watson, Executive Director, Downtown Women's Center. The Honorable Jan C. Perry, Councilwoman, 9th District - City of Los Angeles, will moderate.

In December 2000, Javits became President and CEO of the Corporation for Supportive Housing. In 2004, while discussing funding for the war in Iraq, she said, "National security has to include providing security to the poorest in this nation. Having a place to live is part of that."

Prior to joining the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Schaffer worked for 10 years developing homeless services and affordable housing.

Watson is Executive Director of the Downtown Women's Center - which provides permanent housing and supportive services to homeless women on Los Angeles's Skid Row. In 2004, she remarked, "Downtown has witnessed a massive increase in single women and women with children that was unimaginable only a few years ago. There has been a lack of leadership to address the immense need for affordable housing in Los Angeles."

Perry was elected to the Los Angeles City Council's 9th district in 2001. She was an early advocate of leveraging Housing Trust Fund money through Proposition 46 to create housing for those who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless.

Earlier this year, LAPD Chief William Bratton spoke to Town Hall and addressed questions regarding policing Skid Row. Visit our online archives: www.townhall-la.org/archives.
