In partnership with our friends at Los Angeles World Affairs Council

Kersti Kaljulaid, President of the Republic of Estonia, will speak to LAWAC at the California Club on Wednesday, October 3rd. She will address how Estonia has focused significant efforts on implementing a wide-scale digital transformation of its public and private sectors culminating in an advanced digitized society, referred to as ‘e-Estonia’. It is the first platform of its kind which allows citizens to file tax returns, apply for e-residency and access their health records online, and offers an example to other nations looking to modernize their government services. President Kaljulaid will outline the challenges and opportunities her country faces in regards to this digital transformation. What are the urgent questions and issues that arise as the basic operations of a society become increasingly digitized? And what lessons can countries developing their online profile learn from Estonia’s experience?

Kersti Kaljulaid became the 5th President of Estonia in 2016. From 2004 to 2016 she was a member of the European Court of Auditors, and has served in a variety of other governmental positions since 1999. She was the CFO and CEO of the Iru Power Plant of state-owned energy company Eesti Energia from 2002-2004. A graduate of the University of Tartu, Kaljulaid was the Council Chair of the university from 2012 to 2016. She has been a co-author of the social-political radio talk show Keskpäevatund (Midday Hour) in radio station Kuku from 2002 to 2004 and the editor of the Eurominutid (Euro-minutes) radio show from 2007 to 2016 in the same station.
