In Case You Missed It...Social Media 2.0 Panel
Our September 15th panel, "Social Media 2.0: Transforming Industries and Consumer Behavior" was another eye-opening and informative discussion. Tony Uphoff, CEO of UBM TechWeb is a social media guru of irrefutable reputation and expertise. He asked panelists Eric Brosum of PainePR, Harry Lin of Idealab and Dr. John Mattison of Kaiser Permanente how Social Media and Smartphones are transforming their industries of public relations, venture capital/technology and health care, respectively. Borsum noted how social networks and smartphones dominate consumers and employees time. Thus, in the public relations industry, the sky is the limit as far as the myriad of ways organizations can communicate with their customers. Lin articulated the Idealab ethos of technology being disruptive in a progressive way. And, Dr. Mattison explained how epidemics of lifestyle are driving up healthcare costs. Through social media, health care providers can promote good health by reaching patients outside of doctor visits.
Employee selection and retention is also affected by social media. Uphoff described the eleven elements outside of the resume that they look for in employees. And, each panelist stated how they check the social media presence of potential employees. Each panelist agreed that having a social media persona was essential for future employees and examining how they presented their personas provided insights about their judgment. Each panelist stated that the Millennials are coming to see the value of privacy once they join the work force. Borsum spoke about how a spokesperson's insensitive Tweet got him fired from the organization in a matter of hours. Paine utilized social media to find his replacements by asking new potential spokespeople to submit their 'quacks,' leading to a global interactive job search.
Lin also talked about the value of multiple personas. He likens his online presence to Neo from The Matrix Trilogy, and asked the audience if their LinkedIn persona was the same as their Facebook. Most audience members noted the distinction between the two. Dr. Mattison also spoke about new avatars and divisions of social media, specifically, the Immortal Digital You. The Immortal Digital You can integrate other expert avatars into one's own personal avatar so as to appear as an expert on all things to your not-yet-born great-grandchild.
The panelists wowed our audience with their expertise. And, they gave us a few references to share with you:
