3/10/2014 - Transcript - Dr. Keith L. Black, Chairman and Professor, Dept. of Neurosurgery, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Dr. Keith L. Black, Chairman and Professor, Dept. of Neurosurgery, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center spoke at Town Hall Los Angeles on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. His speech, "A Healthcare Tsunami: Decline of Cognitive Function with Aging," discussed the impact of Alzheimer's on our health care system, cutting edge developments in treatment and diagnosis, and what we can do to prevent our own mental deficits. General healthy living and taking care of your body is important, but certain foods and spices, especially cumin, can also be helpful in preventing cognitive decline with aging.

"Pharmaceutical companies are literally spending billions of dollars trying to develop drugs to treat a disease at the end-stage, which means they're trying to treat something where they actually have to reverse brain cell death, have to regenerate brain cells and remake all those connections, which is almost impossible to do. And that's why we essentially see drug failure after drug failure after drug failure, after billions and billions of dollars of medical research. Until we have the ability to have an early way of intervening 20 years before the person actually develops the disease, we're not going to solve the problem."
